Technical Woes Lead Belmont to Postpone Pick 6
Edited press releaseFriday's Pick 6 at Belmont Park was postponed until Saturday because of continued technical problems with Verizon's fiber lines. There is a Pick 6 carryover from Thursday of $456,860.97.The problems, which interfered with the dissemination of video and audio information to New York Racing Association simulcast outlets, surfaced earlier Friday, forcing the delay of post time for the third race from 2:02 p.m. EDT to 2:30 p.m. While Verizon officials were guardedly optimistic the issue would be resolved Friday afternoon, it was decided to postpone the Pick 6 until Saturday. The decision to cancel the Pick 6 was made immediately after the third race. The fourth race would have been the first leg of the Pick 6."This was a decision based on fairness to all our wagering participants across the country," said Bill Nader, NYRA senior vice president and chief operating officer. "Bettors here on track and at New York City OTB had the opportunity to watch and wager on our races, but the rest of the NYRA simulcast network was in the dark. Since the huge carryover was built on dollars wagered by customers from Canada to California, every customer deserved the opportunity to participate. This was a tough decision, but one based on fairness."Saturday is "Super Saturday" at Belmont with a 10-race card featuring the 88th running of the grade 1, $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Additionally, there will be four other grade 1 stakes. First race post is 1 p.m. Saturday's Pick 6 kicks off in the fifth race (post time 3:05 p.m.)
