Dubai World Cup Moved Back a Week

The world's richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I), will be run a week later in 2007, the $6 million event set for March 31.

The new date for the 12th running of the race was chosen to coincide with the international holiday season, which organizers hope will open the event up to more international guests. Purse money on the night totals $21 million and "Super Thursday," the meeting's 'dress rehearsal,' will be March 1.

The Dubai Racing Club also announced a new initiative, the "Winter Racing Challenge," to stimulate competition and interest in the domestic racing season. The challenge will encompass all race meetings held at Nad Al Sheba in Dubai during the early part of the season from Nov. 9 through Jan. 11.

Races will be held over six furlongs, a mile, and 1 ¼ miles, with the top six horses over each distance qualifying for a finale, over their respective distance, on Jan. 11.

The Winter Racing Challenge finale will also feature two additional turf races and an Arabian conditions race.
