Jack Smallwood, longtime
Daily Racing Form chartcaller and columnist, died Oct. 3, three days before his 77th birthday, at his home in Pembroke Pines, Fla.
A native of Grand View, Ind., Smallwood began his racetrack career as a youth, walking hots for Kenny Noe Sr. at Ellis Park in Kentucky, across the border from his home. Eventually he and Noe's son, Kenny Jr., took on assistant trainer duties there.
Smallwood joined
Daily Racing Form in 1956 before meeting and marrying Dolores Ziegler in 1962.
He was the father of Gulfstream Park's Jayne Tollefsen and also is survived by a son, Jon Ziegler of Pembroke Pines; three grandchildren (Gerard and Keith Tollefsen and Ursula Ziegler, all of Pembroke Pines) and three sisters (June Heilman, Sue Saxe and Nancy Roth).
Services will be held Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Boyd's Funeral Home, located at 1600 University Drive in Pembroke Pines. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America.
