West Virginia Derby (gr. III) winner Bright One has been tabbed the 5-2 morning-line favorite for Saturday night's grade II, $500,000 Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park. The track's signature Thoroughbred event, for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles, has attracted a full field of 12.
Bright One, who will make his fifth career start for owners Carolyn Sue Bruder and Delmar Daubs, drew post position nine in the Indiana Derby. Unraced at two, the son of Dance Brightly finished second in his debut in a maiden event at Churchill Downs in late May. Since then, the Dale Romans-trained runner has reeled off three consecutive wins, the last being the $750,000 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Race Track & Gaming Resort Aug. 6.
Bred by Mike Bruder, Bright One will make his second foray into graded stakes competition and looks to master Hoosier Park's seven-eighths-mile track. Mark Guidry, who guided Bright One to his last two victories, will be in the irons.
King's Bishop Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Star Dabbler has drawn the rail for trainer Michael Hushion and is the second choice at odds of 7-2 for jockey Richard Migliore. The Saint Ballado colt has registered two wins and three seconds in six starts this season and has yet to miss the board. Owned by Barry Schwartz, Star Dabbler enters the Indiana Derby after finishing 5 1/4 lengths behind Henny Hughes at Saratoga in his first graded stakes competition.
John Oxley's Dr. Pleasure looks to pick up his first win of the season in the Indiana Derby. Trainer John Ward last sent out the Thunder Gulch
colt to a third-place finish in the $1-million Travers Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 26. Dr. Pleasure has drawn post position two and is the third choice at 4-1. Robby Albarado, a two-time winner of the Indiana Derby, picks up the mount.
The Indiana Derby is slated as the ninth race on Saturday's card, with an estimated post time of 9:40 p.m. EDT.
