Water Main Break Forces Philly Park to Scrap Card
A water main break discovered by construction workers early Monday morning forced the cancellation of live racing at Philadelphia Park and could threaten Tuesday's card as well."There is no water in the grandstand, and no water for showers or the hot box in the jockey's room, so we couldn't open for business," said Sal Sinatra, Philly Park director of racing. "I won't know until later (later Monday) or (Tuesday) whether we'll be able to race Tuesday, either."The grandstand at the Bensalem Township, Pa., racetrack is currently undergoing a massive reconstruction as management prepares it for the first wave of slot machines. With the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board having licensed most racetracks Sept. 27, the track expects to be open for slots business in mid-December.The first two floors of the grandstand will accommodate slots players, while the third floor will be primarily for pari-mutuel wagering.
