(Edited press release)Central Florida Community College has added two Thoroughbred racing courses to its equine program.
The "Thoroughbred Sales" course will be offered 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 10-24, at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road, Bldg. 40, Room 212. The cost is $60. "Investing in Thoroughbreds" and "Handicapping the Races" will be offered 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Nov. 14-28, also at the Ocala Campus, Bldg. 42, Room 101.
The "Thoroughbred Sales" course will teach the basic structure of how a racetrack functions, including: where the money comes from and where it goes, management, employees, takeout, taxes, politics, and the connection between the breeding shed and the races. The primary focus of this course will be on public sales, from entries to the sales ring and beyond. Additional subjects covered will be physical and verbal presentation, how to prepare a horse for sale, horse care during the sale, how to read a pedigree page, breeding basics, nicks, pedigrees, conformation, and the quarter horse connection.
"Investing in Thoroughbreds" covers the complete process of purchasing, training, racing, or reselling the race horse. Private and auction purchases are covered, as well as imports, trouble lines, graded and group races, odds, track bias, soundness, lone speed, commissions, trainers, jockeys, equipment, risk, and returns - to name just a few.
Instructor Thomas Sweeney has more than 30 years experience in all phases of the Thoroughbred industry. Sweeney has bought and sold horses from Del Mar to Ocala Breeders' Sales. Sweeney has been a licensed bloodstock agent and an owner in California and Florida. He has managed private and commercial farms in California, Arizona, and Florida.
