Jara Off Mounts Thursday After Belmont Spill

Fernando Jara took off the remainder of his mounts Sept. 28 after he was thrown at the start of the fourth race at Belmont Park. The 18-year-old jockey was aboard 2-year-old Kulia, a first time starter for trainer John Terranova, when the filly ducked out slightly and unseated her rider after a slow start.

Jara complained of pain in his right hand and was transported to North Shore University Hospital in New York after being taken off the track via ambulance. The severity of the injury was still undetermined Thursday evening.

"His hand is hurt, but I don't know how bad it is," said the jockey's agent, Randy Romero. "I'll see him later tonight and find out what's going on."

Jara won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) aboard Jazil and is the regular rider of Invasor, one of the favorites in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) Oct. 7.
