Embossed inched out a nose win over Lord Carmen to take the $200,000 Kentucky Cup Turf Stakes (gr. IIIT), part of the Kentucky Turf Festival, at Kentucky Downs Sept. 26.
The stakes was originally carded for Sept. 23 but was rescheduled for Sept. 25 after heavy rains and damaging winds pounded the South Central Kentucky oval over the weekend. The decision to push the races back one additional day came after the wet weather continued through Sept. 24.
The winner completed the 1 1/2-mile distance over a turf course rated good in 2:36.92. Lord Carmen was second, with Rochester three quarters of a length back in third. Betting favorite and last year's winner, Silverfoot, finished fifth.
Embossed returned $71.60, $29.80, and $11. Lord Carmen paid $19.20 and $7.40. For his show effort, Rochester paid $5.40. The exacta paid $781.60 and the trifecta returned $8,055.20.
Niall O' Callaghan conditions the 4-year-old son of Mark of Esteem out of the Vision mare L-Way First for Gary Tanaka, who privately purchased the turf runner at the start of the 2006 season from Double Down Stables and Epona Racing. Harron Eakin Farms bred the ridgling colt in Ireland.
Embossed, under jockey Larry Melancon, tracked the early pace while setting four wide in the early strides before moving up on pacesetter Causeway as the field of eight entered the run down the backstretch. The winner made his move on the pacesetter entering the upper stretch and then managed a narrow advantage the remainder under strong handling to gamely prevail.
The win for Embossed, who began his career in England before shipping to the United States in 2004, was his first in stakes company. He had previously finished third in the 2005 Hawthorne Derby (gr. IIIT). Embossed has a career record of 4-4-2 from 18 starts. He has earned $267,433.
