Dr. Alexander John "Alex" Alexander V, who grew up on historic Woodburn Farm near Midway, Ky., died Sept. 17, his 65th birthday, of a heart ailment.

Woodburn had been in Alexander's family for more than 200 years. The farm stood the great stallion Lexington in the 1800s and produced numerous winners of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont, and Travers Stakes.

Alexander, who earned a Ph.D. in microbiology, worked on blood typing and the DNA of horses. His work contributed to a testing procedure that is used in racing.
