Silver Deputy Colt Leads Way at Keeneland Saturday
A Silver Deputy colt fetched the top price of $625,000 Saturday at the Keeneland September yearling auction in Lexington as selling resumed following a break Friday. Geathers Racing Stable purchased the dark bay or brown colt from Gracefield.Produced from the 10-year-old winning Cox's Ridge mare Zuri Ridge, the colt is a half-brother to the winner Swift Wings (by Anees), who finished third in a division of the 2005 Remington Park Oaks. Zuri Ridge is a half-sister to the grade I winner Voodoo Dancer (by Kingmambo).Aspiration Stud bought Saturday's session topper for only $60,000 during last year's Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Windfields Farm bred him in Canada.In all Saturday, 294 yearlings were sold for a gross of $31,397,000, which was up 5.2% from a year ago, when the total was $29,839,000 for the 274 horses sold. However, the average price and the median price both suffered declines. The average fell 1.9%, from $108,901 last year to $106,793 this year. The median dropped 5.9%, from $85,000 to $80,000.Through five sessions, the gross and average remain ahead of last year's pace while the number of horses sold is down. So far, the 1,156 horses that have found new homes have grossed $304,306,500 and averaged $263,241. Last year, the 1,191 yearlings sold during the first five sessions grossed $301,654,000 and averaged $253,278. The median is the same for both years, $150,000.A More Than Ready colt brought Saturday's second-highest price of $410,000. J.J. Pletcher, the father of trainer Todd Pletcher, bought the colt as agent. The dark bay or brown yearling is out of the 13-year-old winning Clever Trick mare Clever Phrase. He is a half-brother to Yingyingying (by Horse Chestnut), who finished second in the Suffolk Downs Oaks and third in the Blue Norther Stakes at Santa Anita Park in 2004.Dark Hollow Farm bred the colt in Maryland and consigned him to the auction as agent.Jay Em Ess Stable purchased a $400,000 Maria's Mon -- River Cache filly from Bluewater Sales, agent. Excel Bloodstock acquired a $400,000 Indian Charlie -- Feminine colt from Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent.The Keeneland sale runs through Sept. 25.
