Shaniko, a grade II track-record setter by A.P. Indy, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Ro Parra's Millennium Farms Kentucky near Lexington.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for Aaron and Marie Jones, Shaniko captured last year's Kentucky Cup Classic Stakes (gr. II) by 4 1/2 lengths at Turfway Park, and in the process set a still-standing track-mark of 1:49.74 for the 1 1/8 miles over Polytrack.

He also posted an impressive 11-length win at Saratoga and finished a neck behind the winner while third in the River City Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Churchill Downs.

"Shaniko is a superb looking horse from a very strong female family," said Millennium manager Elke Krohn. "His young dam, Sapphire n' Silk (by Pleasant Tap), won the Prioress Stakes (gr. II), and his second dam, Golden Tiy, is by top broodmare sire Dixieland Band."

Bred in Kentucky by William A. Carl, Shaniko retired with 11 wins or placings in 16 races and earnings of $388,380. A fee will be announced later.
