Survivalist, a graded stakes winner whose dam is a full sister to leading sire Seeking the Gold, has been retired from racing after suffering a tendon injury during training at Belmont Park earlier this week. A 4-year-old son of Danzig, Survivalist ran second in the Aug. 19 Philip H. Iselin Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) in what was his final start.A homebred for Phipps Stable trained by Shug McGaughey, Survivalist finished first or second in 10 of 15 races and earned $478,920. He won last year's Gotham Stakes (gr. III) in his first added-money try, then ran second to Bellamy Road in the Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I). This year, he took the R. R. M. Carpenter Jr. Memorial Handicap.Survivalist is a full brother to young Maryland stallion Polish Miner. In addition to his dam, Miner's Game (by Mr. Prospector), being a full sister to Seeking the Gold, she is half-sister to grade I winner Fast Play and grade III winner Stacked Pack.No decision has been reached as to where Survivalist will enter stud.
