Survivalist, a graded stakes winner whose dam is a full sister to leading sire Seeking the Gold
, has been retired from racing after suffering a tendon injury during training at Belmont Park earlier this week. A 4-year-old son of Danzig, Survivalist ran second in the Aug. 19 Philip H. Iselin Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) in what was his final start.
A homebred for Phipps Stable trained by Shug McGaughey, Survivalist finished first or second in 10 of 15 races and earned $478,920. He won last year's Gotham Stakes (gr. III) in his first added-money try, then ran second to Bellamy Road in the Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I). This year, he took the R. R. M. Carpenter Jr. Memorial Handicap.
Survivalist is a full brother to young Maryland stallion Polish Miner
. In addition to his dam, Miner's Game (by Mr. Prospector), being a full sister to Seeking the Gold, she is half-sister to grade I winner Fast Play and grade III winner Stacked Pack.
No decision has been reached as to where Survivalist will enter stud.
