(Keeneland press release)
Buyers from around the world are converging on Keeneland as it prepares to hold its 62nd annual September yearling sale, beginning Monday in Lexington.

Keeneland has cataloged a record 5,161 horses for the auction, which runs Sept. 11-25. No sale is conducted Friday, September 15. Sessions begin at 10:00 a.m. (EDT) daily.

"The world comes to Central Kentucky for Keeneland's September yearling sale," said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of sales. "The September sale offers a quantity of quality – strength at every level of the market. So no matter what price range a buyer wants to play in, he will be satisfied. It is one stop shopping."

Forty yearlings sold for $1 million or more at the 2005 September yearling sale – the highest grossing Thoroughbred auction in the world with $384,349,900 in receipts. The September sale record for the highest price for an individual horse was shattered when a colt by Storm Cat out of Tranquility Lake sold for $9.7 million to John Ferguson, who signed the ticket on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai. The colt was consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent for Mr.and Mrs. Martin J. Wygod.

The total number of horses cataloged for September this year - 51 more than last year's sale record 5,110 – consists of 2,704 colts and 2,457 fillies. It is the largest Keeneland catalog ever, eclipsing the previous record of 5,111 cataloged for the 2000 November breeding stock auction.

Yearlings by 300 different stallions have been cataloged, including such sires as A.P. Indy, Danzig, Deputy Minister, Distorted Humor  , Dynaformer, Elusive Quality  , El Prado, Forestry  , Fusaichi Pegasus  , Giant's Causeway  , Gone West, Kingmambo, Machiavellian, Maria's Mon, Pulpit, Sadler's Wells, Seeking the Gold, Storm Cat, and Unbridled's Song.

Stallions represented by yearlings from their first crop include Aldebaran, Dubai Destination, Empire Maker, Harlan's Holiday, Hawk Wing, Hold that Tiger, Kafwain  , Macho Uno  , Mineshaft  , Posse, Proud Citizen  , Sky Mesa  , Van Nistelrooy, Vindication, Whywhywhy, and Yankee Gentleman  .

Additionally, Keeneland will offer several new conveniences to horsemen this September. The loading chutes in the barn area have been redesigned to make them more functional and create a more efficient traffic flow for vans and trucks. Keeneland also is working to extend wireless capability to all tack rooms in the sales barns in time for the September auction.

Coverage of the first two days of the sale, September 11-12, will be broadcast live in the United States by HorseRacing TV (HRTV) and on a tape-delayed basis by TVG. Exclusive coverage in the United Kingdom and Ireland will be broadcast live on Racing World.

Keeneland also will provide live coverage of the entire sale on its Website, courtesy of Post Time Technologies.
