Filly Chief Officer Romps in N.Y. Breeders' Futurity

Chief Officer broke right to the front and never looked back on her way to a 5 1/2-length victory in the $250,518 New York Breeders' Futurity at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack in Farmington, N.Y., on Monday.

With her win in the 44th renewal of the stake for New York-bred 2-year-olds, the bay filly by Officer out of Guilty Pleasure (by Pine Bluff), took home the largest winner's share - $150,311 - of any race in the history of the Western New York track.

Owned by Zayat Stables, Chief Officer has won back-to-back stakes at Finger Lakes. The $105,000 yearling purchase also won the $126,725 Lady Finger Stakes by a wide margin Aug. 19. The Bill Mott trainee became the ninth filly to defeat males in the history of the six-furlong dash.

Fernando Jara, who won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) with Jazil, was aboard the $262,076 earner. The 18-year-old from Panama won his tenth stake of the year.

"It's been a great year", said Jara. "The Belmont was very special."

Chief Officer broke fast from the rail to lead by a length early. She widened the lead after drifting off the rail, responded on the turn to lead by 5 1/2 lengths at the furlong marker, and was ridden out.

Chief Officer covered the six-furlong distance in a time of 1:11.16 after fractions of :22 2/5 and :45 3/5. The odds-on favorite paid $3.10, $2.40, and $2.20. Horse Thief, ridden by Robert Messina, finished second and returned $11.60 and $7.50. Solid Strike, Channing Hill aboard, held third to return $6.
