Turf Paradise Derby winner Startac, two-time grade II stakes runner-up Palmeiro, and San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) runner-up I Love Silver each worked at Santa Anita Sunday morning. All three are listed by the track as probable for Saturday's Santa Anita Derby (gr. I).
I Love Silver earned a bullet for his six-furlong work, the quickest of 19 such works at the track Sunday morning. I Love Silver completed the distance in 1:10 2/5, a tick faster than Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) winner Spain.
"The plan was to slow him down today," said trainer Dean Greenman. "But two horses broke out in front of him -- out of the starting gate -- he saw 'em out there about 10 lengths in front of him and at the wire, he just blew by 'em. We'll see how he is tomorrow, but right now it doesn't seem to have taken anything out of him. Good horses are supposed to work like that anyway."
I Love Silver will be Greenman's first Santa Anita Derby starter. Greenman is the son of trainer Walter Greenman, who passed away in August. The elder Greenman never saddled a Santa Anita Derby starter.
"He picked out the horse," Dean Greenman said. "He broke the horse, he did just about everything. I've just taken over, that's all."
Laffit Pincay Jr. will be in the irons on Saturday.
Under jockey Alex Solis, Startac worked five furlongs in 1:01 1/5, after which trainer Simon Bray confirmed the colt will start in Saturday's race. Aside from the Turf Paradise Derby, Startac also won the Generous Stakes (gr. IIIT) as a juvenile. Solis will ride the Theatrical colt in the 1 1/8-mile Derby.
Palmeiro, a runner-up in both the Santa Catalina (gr. II) and San Rafael (gr. II), went a mile in 1:39 4/5. Kent Desormeaux has the riding assignment on Saturday.
Others listed as probable for the $750,000 race, with jockeys, include: Point Given, Gary Stevens; Crafty C.T., Eddie Delahoussaye; Scorpion, Victor Espinoza; Early Flyer, Tyler Baze. Cherokee Kim is listed as a possible starter.
