(from Del Mar notes)
Cecil Peacock's Brother Derek worked seven furlongs in 1:26 3/5 Sunday at Del Mar and appears headed toward the $100,000-added El Cajon Stakes Sept. 2 at one mile.

"We're leaning toward the El Cajon," said trainer Dan Hendricks, who has said he's had the Super Derby (gr. II) Sept. 23 at Louisiana Downs on his radar, too.

Del Mar clockers caught Brother Derek going the first quarter-mile in :26 2/5, a half-mile in :50 3/5, five furlongs in 1:02 2/5, and six furlongs in 1:14 4/5. He was caught galloping out a mile in 1:39 3/5.

"It was just what we wanted," Hendricks said. "We got him a little company. I had a horse (Respected, another Hendricks trainee) break in on him early and just finish up even with him. He'll get a lot out of the work."

Respected was given a time of 1:12 3/5 for six furlongs.
