(from Arlington Park report)Cryptoquip, whose 11 3/4-length victory in the Queen City Oaks at River Downs was wiped out when the race was declared no contest because of a starting gate malfunction, officially earned black type for the first time by winning the $144,500 Arlington Breeders' Cup Oaks (gr. III) by a half-length.
The Tom Proctor-trained daughter of
Cryptoclearance was clocked in 1:49.42 for the 1 1/8 miles over a fast track. Elisabeth H. Alexander owns Cryptoquip, who prevailed under jockey Robby Albarado after a long stretch drive against the 13-10 favorite Coolwind.
"She ran well and did everything right," Albarado said. "I worked her before she ever ran, but I never got a chance to ride her (in a race) before. Tom gave me a chance today, and I made the best of it."
Cryptoquip got away with an easy opening quarter mile of :25.00 before picking up the pace some to record a half in :48.17, three-quarters in 1:11.95 and a mile in 1:36.46.
The Arlington Breeders' Cup Oaks was the second win in four starts for Cryptoquip, who earned $90,000 to push her bankroll to $124,590. Sent off as the 5-2 second choice, she paid $7.80, $3.80, and $2.80.
Coolwind challenged the winner in the stretch after prompting the pace in second all the way around. She paid $3 and $2.20.
"I didn't want to let the leader get away, so I stayed a little closer than I wanted to," said Eusebio Razo Jr., who rode the runner-up. "When I took my filly outside to challenge, she was digging hard and trying her best. She gave me everything she had."
The 122-pound high weight Rolling Sea, ridden by James Graham, was third in the six-horse field and paid $2.80.
My Chickadee, Meadow Skippin, and American Diva completed the order of finish.
