Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel saddled the winners of both stakes races Saturday at Santa Anita Park. Frankel sent out Juddmonte Farms' Marine for a half-length victory in the $83,475 La Puente Stakes for 3-year-olds.
And in the $81,975 Providencia Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, Frankel-trained horses ran one-two as Dr. John Chandler's Dynamous held off stable mate and 4-to-5 favorite Heads Will Roll for a half-length victory.
An English-bred by Marju, Marine made his first start since a fourth in the grade III Generous Stakes at Hollywood Park last November. Eddie Delahoussaye rode the winner at 116 pounds. Marine ran one mile on a firm turf course in 1:35.30 and paid $11.40, $3.80 and $3.40.
River God, the 3-to-2 favorite ridden by Alex Solis at 118 pounds, and Media Mogul, Chris McCarron up at 114 pounds, finished in a dead-heat for second place. River God returned $2.40 and $2.60 while Media Mogul paid $4.60. Triple Crown nominee Global Gait finished seventh in the nine-horse field.
A Kentucky-bred by Dynaformer, Dynamous ran 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:50.13 and paid $11, $4 and $3.20 for her triumph in the Providencia. Victor Espinoza rode the winner. Dynamous is 2-0-0 from three starts and the $48,915 first prize pushed her earnings to $72,315.
Heads Will Roll, Solis riding at 114 pounds, paid $2.60 and $2.20, and Little Firefly, Delahoussaye aboard at 116 pounds, finished third and paid $3.20.
Frankel, 59, ranks fourth all-time in Santa Anita stakes victories with 74. The late Charlie Whittingham is the all-time leader with 204 stakes wins.
