Lava Man is 8-5 Choice in Pacific Classic

Lava Man (near) nips Ace Blue in the Hollywood Gold Cup

Lava Man, unbeaten in five races this year, including victories in the Santa Anita Handicap and Hollywood Gold Cup (both gr. I), has been installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite in Sunday's 16th running of the $1 million Pacific Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar.

Lava Man, who will be ridden by Corey Nakatani for trainer Doug O'Neill, , drew post position number 2 in an eight-horse field entered for the 1 1/4-mile test, Del Mar's signature race.

Next on the morning line at 3-1 is the 2005 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner and hero of the recent San Diego Handicap (gr. II) Giacomo. Magnum is 5-1; Perfect Drift, 6-1; Super Frolic, 8-1; Good Reward, 10-1; Preachinatthebar, 12-1, and Top This and That, 20-1.

Post-time for the Pacific Classic will be approximately 4:43 p.m. Sunday.
