Emerald Earrings Retired; Headed to Keeneland November Sale

Daniel A. Herrmann's Emerald Earrings, winner of this year's West Long Branch and Monmouth Beach Stakes at Monmouth Park, has been retired from racing. The 5-year-old daughter of Helmsman will be offered in the Keeneland November breeding stock sale in Kentucky, according to her trainer, Bruce Alexander. She will be consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency.

Alexander, who trained Emerald Earrings throughout her career, said the mare suffered from a respiratory problem in her last race, when she finished sixth in the Lady¹s Secret Stakes at Monmouth on Aug. 6.

"I was hoping to race her twice more this fall," Alexander said, "but she displaced in that last race, and I figured it was time to stop on her."

Emerald Earrings, a Kentucky-bred, earned $478,866 and won 10 of her 23 career races. She captured five added-money events, including the 2004 Ontario Colleen Handicap at Woodbine. She finished third in the 2005 editions of the Molly Pitcher Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) and the Taylor Made Matchmaker Stakes (gr. IIIT).
