Despite a somewhat troubled trip, Moyglare Stud Farm's Make No Mistake rallied in the stretch to win Saturday's $100,000 Bougainvillea Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Hialeah Park. Under jockey Jose Santos, Make No Mistake completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.10 on the turf course listed as "good."
Second wagering choice Aly's Alley finished second, three-quarter lengths behind the winner. A Little Luck came home third, followed by 7-5 favorite Stokosky, Lonely Place, Dillonmyboy, Devil Ray, Rumsonontheriver, Gritty Sandie, An Oscar for Bert, and No Complaints.
"Everybody was taking back in this race so I was close to the pace," said Santos. "I asked him to run the last quarter and he took off. I was whipping and driving but he was waiting for horses to come to him. We went wide and kept rolling and at the three-sixteenths pole I knew my horse wasn't going to let that other horse (Aly's Alley) get by."
The win marks the fourth in 17 career starts for the 6-year-old, and his first in four North American races. The Bougainvillea was the first start of 2001 for the Christophe Clement-trained Make No Mistake (Darshaan -- Respectfully, by The Minstrel) , who finished second in his most recent race, a Saratoga allowance race in September. Prior to the Saratoga race, he finished fourth in another allowance race and fifth in the Fort Marcy Handicap (gr. IIIT). Make No Mistake won two group stakes in Ireland, including the 1998 Royal Whip Stakes (Ire-II). In 1999, he finished eighth in Sunline's Cox Plate (Aus-I). He was bred in Ireland by Roncon.
"He has been training very well at Payson Park," said assistant trainer Nicholas Bachalard. "Christophe (Clement) decided to stop on him last year and give him some time. He had a few minor problems, nothing serious. I don't know where he'll run next. He was a good horse in Europe."
Sent off at 7-1, Make No Mistake returned $16, $7.60, and $6. Aly's Alley paid $4.60 and $3.40. A Little Luck was worth $3.80 to show. The winning exacta combination returned $3.80. (Chart, Equibase
