Terrence Lanni and Bernard Schiappa's grade I winner Shining Energy will most likely start in the Sept. 2 Palomar Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) at Del Mar before being retired and offered for sale in Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's November sale, trainer Julio Canani said.
The 4-year-old daughter of
Rahy and the Lycius mare Miss Universal finished sixth in the July 1 Cash Call Mile (gr. IIIT) at Hollywood Park in her last start.
"She's probably only going to run one more time before she goes in the sale," Canani said. "There's an outside chance she could run in the Breeders' Cup, but I want to see how she runs in the Palomar first. But she will definitely be sold in Kentucky."
She will be consigned to the sale by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency.
Shining Energy, who began her career with four winless starts in Europe, captured the Gamely Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. IT) and the San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) and two other non-graded events this year and has earned $524,837 from a career line of 16-5-3-1.
Canani also said that recent import Porto Santo, runner-up to A. P. Warrior as the 6-5 favorite in Saturday's $150,000 La Jolla Handicap (gr. IIT), came out of the race in good order and will now move on to the Sept. 4 Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT).
The French-bred son of Kingsalsa and the Jeune Homme mare Exciting Times, who is also the dam of Beverly D Stakes (gr. IT) heroine Gorella, just missed by a nose in the La Jolla, but came back in top shape and will be ready for redemption in the nine-furlong Del Mar Derby, Canani said.
"He ate up everything," Canani said. "After the race on his way back to the barn he was calling to the fillies."
Porto Santo, who raced for the first time in the colors of Lanni and Schiappa after being purchased from David Milch for an undisclosed sum the morning of the race, has earned $142,570 from a record of 8-3-2-1. He also finished second in the July 19 Oceanside Stakes.
