Dare To Dream Stable's 6-year-old mare Nicole's Dream defeated males in gate to wire fashion to take the first running of the $250,000 Turf Sprint Championship at Calder Race Course on Saturday.
Trainer Larry Rivelli had also entered Nicole's Dream in the $250,000 Distaff Turf Sprint against fillies and mares, but obviously made the right decision by running in the Turf Sprint Championship. Unbridled Sidney won the Distaff Turf by 3 1/2 lengths in a slight upset.
Ridden by her regular jockey E.T. Baird, she covered the five furlongs on firm turf in :55.44. Atticus Kristy, the 2-to-1 post time favorite ridden by Jesus Castanon, was a length back in second, while Nacascolo and Julio Garcia finished third, 2 1/2 lengths behind the winner.
Shipping in from Arlington Park, Nicole's Dream set all the pace in the race, running the first quarter in :21.06 and the half mile in :43.72. Sent off at odds of 5-to-2, she returned $7, $3.60, and $2.60. Atticus Kristy, the 120-pound high weight shipping in from Churchill Downs, paid $3.20 and $2.60. Nacascolo, stabled at Calder, returned $5.40 to show.
The Turf Sprint Championship marks Nicole's Dream's third consecutive stakes victory and 24th career win in 49 starts. She earned $150,000 to push her lifetime bankroll to $807,904.
Norrine and Douglas Devenport's 5-year-old mare Unbridled Sidney dominated the inaugural running of the Distaff Turf Sprint Handicap, defeating Jewels N Gems by 3 1/2 lengths in the five-furlong turf test. Course record holder Whenthedoveflies finished third, while the even-money choice Gilded Gold ran fifth.
Trained by Ronny Werner at Churchill Downs, Unbridled Sidney won the Mamzelle Stakes there during Kentucky Derby week. Werner later shipped her to Calder for the Distaff Turf Sprint Handicap, the $100,000 prep for Saturday's race held on Summit of Speed
day, where she finished third.
Unbridled Sidney covered the five furlongs on firm turf in :55.36, just slightly faster than the :55.44 that Nicole's Dream ran in the Turf Sprint Championship earlier on the card. Jockey Shaun Bridgmohan rode Unbridled Sidney to victory.
The Kentucky-bred daughter of Unbridled's Song paid $10.40, $5.20, and $3.60.
Jewels N Gems returned $6.20 and $5.20, while Whenthedoveflies paid $5.60.
Unbridled Sidney's sixth win in 16 starts was worth $150,000 and pushed her career earnings to $411,379.
