(from Del Mar release)
Grade II winner Attima, trained by Julio Canani, leads 10 3-year-old fillies in Saturday's $150,000 San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) at one mile on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

The San Clemente is the leading Del Mar prep stakes for the Del Mar Oaks (gr. IT) on Aug. 19. The race is slated for the fifth on the card. One of the fillies, Lake Marina, was supplemented for $1,500.

Canani won the San Clemente last year with Shining Energy. That filly was unable to duplicate her San Clemente effort while finishing last of nine in the Del Mar Oaks, although she did become a grade I winner in the Gamely Breeders' Cup on the Hollywood turf in May. Canani won the $300,000 Oaks the previous year with Amorama.

The British-bred Attima has two wins in three starts this year, coming to the Canani barn after spending her 2-year-old season in France. She won the 1 1/8-mile Honeymoon Breeders' Cup (gr. IIT) on the Hollywood turf June 7 before finishing last after tiring in the 1 1/4-mile American Oaks Invitational (gr. IT) over the same course July 2.

Trainer Jim Cassidy will take two swings at Attima with the Irish breds Sol Mi Fa and Soothsay, who have the credentials to get the job done. Sol Mi Fa actually finished ahead of Attima in the Oaks, finishing fifth, following a big win in the Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Oaks. She beat stablemate Soothsay that day before the latter finished second in Hollywood's Flawlessly Stakes on the Oaks undercard at Hollywood.

Cassidy has history with this race, too, having saddled Katdogawn to win in 2003.
