Lawyer Ron, a 2 ¾-length winner of the Arkansas Derby (gr. II), recorded his first workout since surgery after running in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) yesterday. The 3-year-old colt was timed in a zippy :34 1/5 for three furlongs, galloping out four furlongs in :46 and change over the main track at Churchill Downs.
He was ridden his workout by regular rider John McKee. Trainer Robert Holthus said the son of Langfuhr
out of the Lord Avie mare Donation, appears to be fully recovered from his surgery May 12 to remove bone chips form his right hind ankle. His next start has yet to be determined.
Lawyer Ron carried a six-race win streak into the Kentucky Derby, in which he finished 12th. After starting his career on turf and Polytrack at Turfway Park, Lawyer Ron was switched to the dirt and ripped off three wins in Louisiana, culminating with a score in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. III) at the Fair Grounds at Louisiana Downs meet.
He won the three top prep races at Oaklawn's 2006 meet: the one-mile Southwest Stakes; the 1 1/16-mile Rebel (gr. III); and the nine-furlong Arkansas Derby.
Lawyer Ron was bred and owned by James T. Hines Jr., who died prior to Lawyer Ron's Arkansas Derby victory. Our Legal Team, headed by Richard and Audrey Haisfield, operators of Stonewall Farm, purchased an interest in Lawyer Ron just prior to the May 6 Kentucky Derby.
Following his racing career, Lawyer Ron will stand at Stonewall Farm near Versailles, Ky.
