On July 5, 1976, Forego lost the Suburban Handicap (gr. I) in his attempt to repeat his 1975 win. The loss, by just a nose to Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Foolish Pleasure, was one of only two losses that year for the gelding who still earned Horse of the Year honors for the third straight year. Forego, raced by Marth Gerry's Lazy F Ranch and trained by Frank Whiteley during his 5-year-old campaign, won the Brooklyn and Woodward Handicaps, both grade I, after the Suburban loss, and added the Marlboro Cup (gr. I) under 137 pounds for his final win of the year.
