High Cotton After Third Straight in Ohio Derby

Peachtree Stable's High Cotton, looking for his third straight win, drew the outside post position in a field of six for Saturday's $350,000 Ohio Derby (gr. II) for 3-year-olds over 1 1/8 miles at Thistledown.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, High Cotton, a bay colt by Dixie Union, is the 9-5 favorite. Chris DeCarlo has the mount.

Garrett Gomez was aboard High Cotton when he won the Northern Dancer Breeders' Cup (gr. II) by 1 1/2 lengths at Churchill Downs June 17. Prior to that, the Kentucky-bred colt won the Sir Barton at Pimlico on Preakness Stakes (gr. I) day.

High Cotton has won four of 10 starts and earned $356,044.

Among the foes lining up to face High Cotton in the 72nd renewal of the Ohio Derby is Joseph Lacombe Stable's Deputy Glitters, who starts just inside of the favorite for trainer Tom Albertrani and jockey Rene Douglas.

Deputy Glitters, at 7-2 on the morning line, won the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) earlier this year. Deputy Glitters was 11th in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) in his most recent start.

Also exiting the Belmont is ninth-place finisher Sacred Light, the second favorite on the morning line at 5-2. Owned by Amerman Racing Stables and trained by David Hofmans, the fourth-place finisher in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) in April has been gelded since the Belmont.

Flashy Bull, owned by West Point Thoroughbreds and trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, ran second in the Fountain of Youth (gr. II) before off-the-board performances in the Florida Derby (gr. I) and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). No rider was named Wednesday for the son of Holy Bull, who is 9-2 in the morning line.

Sayhellotolarry ran third behind High Cotton in the Nothern Dancer BC for trainer Michael Tomlinson. The Ohio-bred Tri Umet won the Cleveland Gold Cup at Thistledown July 1 for trainer Jeff Radosevich.
