Richwoman, winner of the Cinderella at Hollywood Park for trainer Steve Asmussen, faces Chagall and Come Together, a pair of rivals from the barn of two-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher in Saturday's $100,000-added Debutante Stakes (gr. III) for 2-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs.
The Debutante, which is being run at six furlongs for the first time, drew a field of seven. The race is co-featured with the Bashford Manor (gr. III) for 2-year-olds on Saturday's 11-race program that kicks off the next-to-last weekend of racing in the Churchill Downs spring meet.
Heiligbrodt Racing Stable's Richwoman, a Florida-bred daughter of Successful Appeal
, is the lone stakes winner in the Debutante field. She rolled to a seven-length victory in her racing debut on April 9 at Keeneland before she shipped to Hollywood Park, where she won the Cinderella by 2 ¼-lengths.
Shaun Bridgmohan will ride Richwoman, the 2-1 second choice in Churchill Downs handicapper Mike Battaglia's morning line odds, as she attempts to provide Asmussen with his third victory in the Debutante and his second in a row. He won the race in 2001 with Cashier's Dream and took last year's renewal with Effectual.
Pletcher saddles Chagall for Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Ahmed Zayat, and Come Together for Starlight Stable and Donald Lucarelli.
Chagall, a Florida-bred daughter of Successful Appeal
, scored an impressive win in her lone start when she broke from the outside post in a field of 10 to score a 1 ½-length win victory at 4 ½-furlongs on June 16 at Churchill Downs. Rafael Bejarano will ride Chagall, who is the 7-5 morning line favorite in the Debutante.
Come Together was beaten in her debut at Keeneland, but launched a strong stretch rally to win her next start at Churchill Downs. Apprentice Julien Leparoux will ride the daughter of Dixie Union
Iron Horse Racing's Lenaro, a daughter of Buddha
, romped to an easy win for trainer Robert Holthus in her debut. J. Fred Miller, III's Beautiful Venue ran fifth to male rivals in Kentucky Breeders' Cup (gr. III). Ilona Whetstone's Gallant Dreamer was an easy winner at Harrah's Louisiana Downs.$100,000 Debutante (gr. III), 2-Year-Old Fillies, 6 Furlongs
