Delhomme's Woozy Scores at Evangeline
Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme earned his biggest win in racing when his little 2-year-old gelding Woozy overcame a poor start to claim the $150,000 D.S. "Shine" Young Memorial Futurity Saturday night at Evangeline Downs. The "Shine" highlighted the 10-race "Louisiana Legends Festival of Racing" program that also included six stakes worth $75,000 apiece and three more carrying $40,000 purses. The evening is to honor individuals and families who have made a positive impact on the state's racing history.Racing just off a contested early pace after trailing the 11-horse field at the start, Woozy, a son of Ide , rallied to the front in mid-stretch and held off the late challenges of Princess Deelite and Margarita Man to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Purchased by Delhomme, who races under the stable name Set Hut LLC, in October of last year, Woozy earned $75,000, earning back his bargain basement purchase price of $6,700 more than ten-fold. Trained by his father, Jerry Delhomme, Woozy was ridden to victory by Willie Lozano Jr. and covered the five furlongs on a track labeled fast in :59 3/5. Sent off at 7-1, Woozy paid $16, $7 and $4. Another 7-1 shot, Princess Deelite, ridden by Luis Quinonez, returned $7 and $4. Margarita Man, the even-money favorite guided by Casey Fusilier, came on late to pick up the show spot, paying $2.60.(Chart, Equibase)
