Cambiocorsa in Deep With 7-Race Win Streak

In spite of a seven-race winning streak, California-bred filly Cambiocorsa will be an underdog as she challenges a talented international cast in the $750,000 CashCall Mile Invitational (gr. IIIT) on the Hollywood Park turf Saturday.

Cambiocorsa, set at 5-1 on the morning line, will meet leading Japanese mare Dance in the Mood, Irish filly Luas Line and Great Britian-bred Toupie as well as North American graded stakes winners Shining Energy, Sweet Talker, Flying Glitter and Hollywood Story in the one-mile race for fillies and mares.

Fellow California-bred Dancing Edie is the lone non-graded/group winner in the field of nine, but she has credentials, including a second to highly regarded Shining Energy one start back in the Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IT).

Cambiocorsa, named after a Ferrari sports car, has had no match in 2006 for trainer Doug O'Neill, racing to victory in all six starts. She registered her first graded victory in the Las Cienegas (gr. IIIT) in April and won the restricted Wishing Well Stakes at one mile at Hollywood May 26.

With the exception of the first quarter in the Las Cienegas, Cambiocorsa has been in front at every call during her seven-race winning streak. The 4-year-old gray filly will break from the one-post with Jon Court aboard.

Cambiocorsa, purchased as a 2-year-old for $90,000 by Leroy Leatherman and his son, Ty, won once in her first six starts, but found a home on the hillside turf course during the winter/spring meeting at Santa Anita. She is eight-for-13 overall with earnings of $409,055.

The 5-2 morning line favorite is Shining Energy, owned by Terry Lanni and Bernie Schiappa. She has won her last two starts for trainer Julio Canani, most recently rallying for an impressive 1 ¾-length victory in the Gamely on Memorial Day. She has won five of 15 starts for earnings of $504,837.

Sweet Talker, 3-1 going into the CashCall Mile, is on a four-race winning streak, including the Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup (gr. IT) at Keeneland in her last start of 2005 and the Winstar Distaff Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Lone Star Park in her most recent start. Trained by H. Graham Motion, she is nine-for-15 overall with earnings of $838,723.

Dance in the Mood came to Southern California with fanfare for the American Oaks (gr. IT) two years ago, but was ridden poorly by Japanese jockey Yutaka Take and finished second. The 5-year-old mare had an off year in 2005 while running mainly in group I events against male company, but she has found her form this year. She won the Victoria Mile (Jpn-I) in mid-May and enters the CashCall Mile with five wins in 20 starts and earnings of $4,485,512.

An edgy filly when here as a 3-year-old, she has matured and looks right at home with Victor Espinoza slated to ride.

Globetrotter Luas Line is also familiar with Hollywood Park. She finished fourth behind Japanese-bred Cesario in the 2005 American Oaks, returned to Ireland for back-to-back victories, then was flown overseas again to win the Garden City Breeders' Cup (gr. IT) at Belmont Park. She has won four of 14 races for earnings of $430,731.

Toupie, winless in two starts since coming to North America from Europe, won a group III race at Chantilly in France two years ago.

Flying Glitter arrives from Kentucky freshened from an allowance victory at one mile on turf at Churchill Downs on May 28. She has two graded wins and is six-for-14 overall for earnings of $596,891.

Hollywood Story is also a former American Oaks starter. She finished third two years ago while making her first start on grass. She finished fourth in the May 29 Gamely while starting on the surface for the second time. She is three-for-23 lifetime with earnings of $943,105. Her most prominent win came when she broke her maiden in the 2003 Hollywood Starlet (gr. I) on dirt.
