Louisiana Broodmare of the Year Knightly Spritely Dead

Knightly Spritely, a two-time Louisiana Broodmare of the Year, died June 20 at Dr. Delmar Caldwell and Jo Ann Thompson's Double Dam Farm near Folsom, La. The 31-year-old daughter of Knightly Dawn was buried near the finish line at the farm's training track.

"She was given to me by some people who were getting out of the business because they knew I would take good care of her," Caldwell said. "We had to be careful with her because she didn't sweat. We installed an air conditioner in her stall that had a door which allowed her to go in and out as she pleased."

Knightly Spritely produced her first stakes winner, List At Dawn (by List), for George L. Martin, and the remainder, Hope List (by List), Knight Man and Knight Woman, (both by El Mandingo), and Spritely Walker (by Skywalker) after she was given to Caldwell. List and El Mandingo stood at Double Dam.

Hope List, a two-time Louisiana champion older female (1995-96), topped $600,000 in earnings, and Knight Woman and Spritely Walker each topped the $500,000 mark. Spritely Walker was state champion 3-year-old male of 2003. Hope List and Knight Woman are both broodmares at Double Dam.

Knightly Spritely, who was Louisiana Broodmare of the Year in 1999 and 2003, produced 17 named foals, 13 of which are winners, including stakes-placed Man of the Night, who stands at Double Dam.

Bred in Ontario, Canada, by Donald Gaiser, Knightly Spritely was produced from the Terrang mare Craim Check.
