Jockey Beverly Burress broke her arm in a spill June 27 in the second race at Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino.
Burress, 21, has been a jockey for a little more than a year. She was riding Exclusive Clare, who went down after breaking her left front leg on the far turn of the six-furlong race. The horse was euthanized.
Burress hit the ground and broke her left arm above the elbow. She will have surgery June 28 at Iowa Methodist Hospital.
"They'll put a plate and some screws in," said trainer Kim Ewing, who was at the hospital with Burress. "We don't know the extent of it yet. She's tough. She'll come back."
Burress, who became a journeyman June 6, was the eighth-leading rider at Prairie Meadows with 21 victories. As an apprentice, she won 30 races at Oaklawn Park, the second-most ever by a female rider at the Arkansas track, to tie for sixth place in the jockey standings.
