Of the 13 horses entered for Sunday's Queen's Plate at Woodbine, 11 have previously run at the Ontario track. But one of the two that hasn't started at Woodbine was made the morning line favorite, and for good reason.
Wanna Runner, owned by Mike Pegram and trained by Bob Baffert, was installed the 9-5 favorite to win Canada's biggest annual race. Victor Espinoza will ship in to ride the son of El Corredor
in the race for 3-year-olds going 10 furlongs.
Wanna Runner has won half of his eight lifetime starts and comes off consecutive impressive wins in the Southwest. He won the WinStar Derby at Sunland Park in New Mexico by 4 3/4 lengths April 1 and then May 13 took the Lone Star Deby (gr. III) at Lone Star Park in Texas by 5 1/4 lengths.
Pegram's runner is eligible because he was bred in Canada by Yvonne Schwabe. The owner purchased him at the 2004 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale for $80,000.
Another coming off consecutive wins is Malakoff, the difference being they are the only two wins in his career. The Lemon Drop Kid
colt broke his maiden April 30 in his fourth start and then won the May 20 Marine Stakes by 7 1/4 lengths.
Malakoff is a homebred for Frank Stronach's Stronach Stables and is trained by Brian Lynch. Todd Kabel rides Malakoff, who breaks from the eight post, just inside Wanna Runner.
Plate Trial winner Pipers Thunder is in the field, as are several that ran behind him in that June 4 prep. By Thunder Gulch
, Pipers Thunder has won two of three starts for owner/breeder Chiefswood Stables and trainer Eric Coatrieux.
Edenwold has never run a bad race, in the money in eight of 10 starts. Owned by James and Alice Sapara and trained by Josie Carroll, the Southern Halo colt dueled early in the Plate Trial and finished third.
Distance may be the question mark for Atlas Shrugs, who was only beaten four lengths in the Plate Trial in his first attempt to stretch out. He had won three straight before that including a $50,000 claiming race in which he was haltered by trainer Reade Baker and D. Roberts and J. Pepper. He is by Compadre.
