Black Type Headline for Williams News

On Target Racing Stable's Williams News earned his first black-type victory Tuesday as a pair of 5-year-old sons of Alleged swept the top two placings in the Stars and Stripes Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT). The Thomas Amoss trainee completed the 1 1/2-mile race in 2:31.22 over yielding turf at Arlington International. Profit Option finished 1 3/4-lengths back in second.

Williams News (Alleged--Wooden Crown, by His Majesty) raced in mid-pack early, took the lead on the third turn, and had a 1/2-length advantage after 1 1/4 miles run in 2:06.01. Williams News increased his lead straightening for home and was never threatened in the stretch.

"He relaxed kindly for me," said winning jockey Robby Albarado. "He's like one of those horses from overseas--you get him covered up and he relaxes."

Williams News was bred in Kentucky by Willmott Stable. He earned $148,425 for the Stars and Stripes victory, his fifth win in 25 starts. He finished second in both the $115,000 Louisville Handicap in June, and the Red Smith Handicap (gr. IIT) in November.

Buff finished third, followed by Thesaurus, Beautiful Dancer, On a Soapbox, Apalachee Special, Minor Wisdom, Just Like Prime, Radevore, Doctor Trotter, and Galic Boy.

Williams News paid $7.80, $4.80, and $3 and led an exacta worth $137.20. (Chart, Equibase)
