Arkansas Derby (gr. II) winner Lawyer Ron has been given the okay to return to training at the barn of veteran Robert Holthus on Friday after surgery following a disappointing run in the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
Holthus said noted equine surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage, who had removed a small chip from Lawyer Ron's right hind leg in a procedure at Lexington, Ky.'s Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, gave the colt a thorough look on Tuesday.
"Dr. Bramlage examined him and said he's ready to go back to training," said Holthus. "We'll try to have him ready to run sometime around the first of September."
Lawyer Ron entered the Kentucky Derby as a major contender off his string of victories at Oaklawn Park that, along with the Arkansas Derby, included the Rebel (gr. III) and Southwest Stakes. He finished 12th to Barbaro in the "Run for the Roses," which was his first career loss on the dirt
The $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic powered by Dodge (gr. I) on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs remains a potential goal for Lawyer Ron, but Holthus said he had much to prove before that could happen.
"If his races warrant that he should run in it, we'd like to go," said Holthus. "He's got to come back and run a couple of good races."
Lawyer Ron's record stands at 7-1-3 in 16 races and with earnings of $1,220,008.
