Romolo's Fritzi Out for Year with Knee Fracture

Romolo's Fritzi, who finished a well-beaten second in an Aqueduct allowance race Saturday as a prep for the Wood Memorial, came out of the race with a fracture of the right front knee, co-owner Barry Irwin of Team Valor said Monday.

"We knew there had to be a reason for the way he ran," Irwin said. "For two days, we were trying to figure it out. He developed some heat in the knee, and X-rays disclosed the fracture. It's a good-sized line, but it's not displaced. We won't know for a few days whether surgery will be needed."

Romolo's Fritzi had won both his starts since being purchased last fall by Team Valor and Seven Pin Stable, including an impressive score in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race at Gulfstream on Mar. 1. He is not expected to race again this year.
