The Kentucky Equine Management Internship (KEMI) program has announced its fall 2006 internship class. Fourteen students were accepted to participate in the 22 week, hands-on internship program that begins with orientation July 8.

The 14 students accepted are: Mike Alex (New Mexico State University), Rachel Bissonette (Ohio State ATI), Joni Bowling (Sierra College), Kristina Breeden (Auburn University), Christina Chigbrow (University of Idaho), Claire Harrison (Oxford Brooks University, England), Star Henderson (Brigham Young University), Lindsey Justyn (Sierra College), Dara Neal (Virginia Tech), Tae Won Park (Korea), Ashley Pinney (Texas A&M University), Katie Raisor (University of Georgia), Katherine Tolbert (Clemson University), and Alisa Tringale (University of Tennessee).

The students will be placed on Thoroughbred farms where they will work as full-time employees either preparing mares, yearlings, and weanlings for the upcoming sales, or starting young horses that are headed to the racetrack. In addition to their work on the farms, the interns will also meet one evening a week to complete the academic component of the program.

Since its inception in 2000, KEMI has attracted nearly 300 students from 42 states and 13 foreign countries. Many of the KEMI graduates are currently employed in Central Kentucky on area farms and in equine-related businesses.
