Fasig-Tipton has catalogued 477 horses for its Kentucky select yearling sale on July 17 and 18 at the Newtown Paddocks near Lexington. The number is down 29.7% from a year ago when the auction had its biggest catalogue ever of 679 horses.
The reduction in size follows a year when the statistics indicated that supply exceeded demand. The gross revenue, average price, and median price in 2005 all declined from 2005's comparable figures while the buy-back rate rose sharply.
"Our nominations did not differ significantly from any other year," said Fasig-Tipton director of marketing Terence Collier. But there was "no question," he added, that Fasig-Tipton tightened up its selection process in an effort to eliminate the "marginal horse that did not find a ready market here last year in July."
