Crafty Shaw charged along the rail in deep stretch Saturday at Oaklawn Park to win the $100,000 Rebel Stakes (gr. III) by three-quarter lengths. Arctic Boy finished second, a half-length in front of Strike It Smart. It was a neck farther back to 3-2 favorite Son of Rocket. Faiths Wish, Secret Romeo, One Special Judge, Grifter, and Spectacular Cat completed the order of finish.
Son of Rocket rushed up from post one to lead early on but bore out a bit heading into the first turn while tracked by Secret Romeo, Crafty Shaw, and Strike It Smart. The favorite continued to lead on the turn while still drifting off the rail, allowing Crafty Shaw, under jockey Joe Johnson, inside position. Crafty Shaw moved up along the inside of Son of Rocket on the backstretch. Strike It Smart moved up on the second turn and edged ahead of Son of Rocket in the stretch. As Arctic Boy rallied wide of Strike It Smart, Crafty Shaw dug in along the rail to complete the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.82 on a fast track.
Crafty Shaw (Crafty Prospector -- Her She Shawklit, by Air Forbes Won) is owned by Lucky Seven Stable and was bred in Kentucky by Lance K. Robinson. The Rebel marks his first stakes win and third career win from six lifetime starts. Prior to the Rebel, he finished third in Son of Rocket's Southwest Stakes after winning a one-mile allowance race by 9 ½ lengths. He is trained by Peter Vestal and raced on Lasix for the first time Saturday.
Crafty Shaw returned $22.20, $8, and $5.20 and keyed an exacta worth $133.60. Arctic Boy paid $8.20 and $4.60. Strike It Smart was worth $3.20 to show. (Chart, Equibase
