In the space of a mere few moments he had two babies sell -– both handsome colts -- for Aust$650,000 apiece to top the session. The second colt -- a supplementary entry -- was the subject of spirited bidding from around the ring and was eventually knocked down to well-known New Zealand stud manager Mark Chitty. The colt is from the mare Mascara Magic.

Chitty, signing under the successful Haunui Farm operation, outlasted South African agent Andy Williams, of World Wide Bloodstock, to secure the well-bred colt which was offered by Kitchwin Hills as agent.
"He's a cracker," described Chitty moments after the hammer fell on the last lot of the session. "We've been associated for many years with Kitchwin Hills and Mick (Malone, stud manager) told us a few weeks back the colt would be heading to this sale."

"Taking into account he didn't have a full sale preparation we thought he was an outstanding colt who would furnish into an outstanding yearling."

Chitty said the price of Aust$650,000 was a fair one considering the prices the Redoute's Choice progeny were selling for over recent months.

"We valued him at about Aust$600,000 and you have to be able to be a bit flexible (with prices)," Chitty noted. "But we struggled to get the extra fifty (thousand)."

The Redoute's Choice colt that sold earlier for Aust$650,000 is out of the mare Closure and was knocked down to a Korean businessman acting as head of a syndicate named Magic Classic. The syndicate will allow him to grow and try and sell him for a big profit in January at the Magic Millions yearling sale.

"Redoute's is the sire of the moment that is for sure and they will probably make a good return. If not, they will race him here," Magic Millions Managing Director David Chester reported.

There was an American influence at this sale on day one as well. Florida-based stud owner and breeder Peter Vegso dabbled for the first time into Australian pinhooking. He secured, through an agent, a glorious looking Danehill Dancer colt from the wonderfully bred mare Miss Alabama for just Aust$68,000.
