Edited press releaseFury Stakes winner Gumboots sustained an injury during a workout on Monday morning and is out of Sunday's $500,000 Labatt Woodbine Oaks.
The
Storm Boot filly had won four of her five starts and would have been one of the favorites for the 1 1/8-mile opening leg of Canada's Triple Tiara series.
"She breezed a sharp five-eighths this morning (1:00, handily)," said Carroll, adding jockey David Clark reported that the three-year-old didn't seem right pulling up. "She took a couple of bad steps coming off the track. Going around the shedrow, she got more and lamer. We x-rayed and found out she had fractured a sesamoid."
Carroll said the injury isn't life-threatening, but the Eaton Hall Farm homebred's racing career is likely over. "Her suspensory is intact. It's not life-threatening. It's highly unlikely she'll ever race again."
Gumboots' return to the races depends on the severity of the injury and whether available procedures can repair the damage to the bone.
"We've sent the x-rays to Kentucky to see if the sesamoid can be wired together. If it can't, then she'll be a broodmare," said Carroll. "It's very disappointing. It could have been much worse. It could have happened during a race. It could have been fatal."
