Carthage, coming off an upset victory over 2005 Eclipse Award winner Lost in the Fog, is the 120-pound high weight among five entered in Sunday's $125,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. III).
Though short on numbers the six-furlong dash for 3-year-olds and up also attracted multiple stakes winners Trickey Trevor, Bonfante and Areyoutalkintome. Peak a Bootrando completes the lineup.
Carthage defeated Lost in the Fog by three lengths while winning the Golden Gate Fields Sprint in 1:09.08 on April 22 at Golden Gate Fields. Lost in the Fog is skipping the Bay Meadows BC Sprint and will run instead at Churchill Downs Saturday as the even-money choice in the $150,000 Aristides Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III).
Trained by Art Sherman, Carthage has won four straight races, including his last three in stakes events. Overall, the 6-year-old gelding has eight victories in 17 starts and $240,185 in earnings.
"This horse is coming into the race as good as I've ever seen him," said Sherman. "We'll find out what type of horse I really have in this race. It's as good a sprint race as we've had up here in a long time. If he runs good in this race I may have to take a few road trips with him."
Sherman owns Carthage in partnership with Phil Baneth and Tony Vitone. Dennis Carr will ride Carthage, who will break from the outside post.
Trickey Trevor, at age 7, scored the biggest victory of his career in his most recent start when he captured the $200,000 Churchill Downs Handicap (gr. II) at seven furlongs on May 6. It was the fourth career stakes victory for Trickey Trevor, who has 18 wins in 35 career starts and $586,566 in earnings.
Jerry Hollendorfer, who owns the gelding in partnership with Dan Jelladian and George Todaro, trains Trickey Trevor.
"He's really a horse that can do quite a few things," said Hollendorfer. "This horse has overcome a lot of injuries. I think he could have been a top horse if he hadn't had some problems."
Bonfante is a lightly raced 5-year-old gelding who has seven victories in 16 starts and $286,682 in earnings. Trained by Steve Specht, Bonfante returned from an eight-month layoff to win the $100,000 California Turf Sprint Championship at Bay Meadows on May 20, meaning he'll be coming back in 15 days for the Bay Meadows BC Sprint.
"He bounced back from that race pretty quick, and he worked super sharp Monday," said Specht, referring to a four-furlong drill in :46 2/5 handily at Golden Gate Fields.
Areyoutalkintome is shipping from Hollywood Park for trainer Doug O'Neill. Areyoutalkintome has banked $642,667 while finishing in the money in 24 of his 32 starts. $125,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. III, Race 3, 2:08 p.m.), 3 & Up, 6 Furlongs
