Gilded Gold wins The Very One Stakes.
Even-money choice Gilded Gold won for the eighth time in 16 starts with a front-running score in the $75,000 The Very One Stakes for fillies and mares at five furlongs on the turf Friday at Pimlico Race Course.

Owned by Bobby Flay, Robert E. Masterson, and Barry L. Weisbord and trained by Alan Goldberg, Gilded Gold took over early and set fractions of :22.23 for the quarter-mile and :45.36 for the half-mile on a course rated good. She held sway under Javier Castellano to win by 2 1/2 lengths over Bright Gold in second, who had a head on Kiss Me Katie in third. Time for the five furlongs was :57.37

Gilded Gold won her second stakes in as many starts this year while bumping her career earnings to $320,222. In her previous outing, she won the Giant's Causeway Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass at Keeneland. The first two finishers in the Giant's Causeway ran one-two in The Very One.

"I rode the filly just like last time," Castellano said. "I got a very good jump from the gate. She was so sharp and quick from the gate it only added to my confidence. She was much the best, and I only had to hold on."

Last year, the 5-year-old mare by Gilded Time out of the El Gran Senor mare Gran Senorita won the Incredible Revenge Stakes at Monmouth Park and the Kattegat's Pride Stakes at Laurel Park.

Gilded Gold is now three-for-four on the turf.

"Alan did a great job pointing the horse to the Giant's Causeway at Keeneland, and he just improved off that effort today," Weisbord said after the race. "This horse can also run well on dirt, but she has bad feet. Chances are we'll keep her on the turf for now."

Weisbord said Gilded Gold could compete in the "Summit of Speed" at Calder Race Course in July, and the filly eventually may try to go one mile.

The winner paid $4, $2.80, and $2.40. Bright Gold, ridden by Horacio Karamanos, returned $4 and $2.80, with Kiss Me Katie and Ryan Fogelsonger paying $5.80 to show.
