The Maryland Jockey Club as usual used the Alibi Breakfast to present some media awards. The event was held May 18 at Pimlico Race Course.
Mike Brunker of NBCSports.com received the David F. Woods Memorial Award; Kenny Mayne of ESPN and Lucy Acton of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred received Old Hilltop awards; Molly Riley of Reuters received the Jerry Fruitkoff Preakness Photography Award sponsored by Nikon; and Jeff Beauchamp of WBAL Radio received the Special Award of Merit.
Brenda Handleman, who retired from Maryland Turf Caterers, was honorary postmaster. Cardinal William H. Keeler gave the invocation.
Kendel Ehrlich, wife of Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich, said the Preakness generates about $30 million in revenue on one day, and that the total value of equine assets in the state is $5.2 billion.
