The Gainsborough Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Fr-I) yielded a dramatic finish Sunday, with the filly Tie Black being awarded the race in the stewards' room.
The Pascal Bary-trained Price Tag, owned by Khalid Abdullah, had produced a terrific late run to win the classic by a head over Tie Black. However, Price Tag, ridden by Thierry Thulliez, drifted to the right, interfering with Impressionnante, who wound up third. The stewards determined that Price Tag should be demoted to third, behind the filly she impeded. Jockey Thulliez also received a two-day riding ban.
The victory in the French One Thousand Guineas marked the daughter of Machiavellian's first group 1 success, and just her second stakes win overall. Her dam, Tender Is Thenight (Barathea) is a half-sister to champion Last Tycoon, who won the 1986 Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. I).
