Magnificent Song wins Edgewood to cap perfect string for Todd Pletcher.
Trainer Todd Pletcher is having a perfect day at Churchill Downs Friday, winning all three of the races in which he had entries. The third was Magnificent Song, who won the $114,900 Edgewood Stakes, the first undercard stakes on Kentucky Oaks day.

Under Garrett Gomez, Magnificent Song came from off the pace in the 8 ½-furlong turf race for 3-year-old fillies and won by one-half length over Fiery Dancer, who had been second during most of the running of the race. May Night came on to get third, 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner. The final time was 1:42.15.

Beau Dare shot right out of the gate to an easy lead under Mark Guidry. Fiery Dancer and Javier Castellano were second, followed by Performing Diva and Edgar Prado and Southern Protocol and Rafael Bejarano. They went a quarter in :23.81 and a half in :47.91.

As the field cornered for home, Fiery Dancer went by on the outside and got the lead, but Gomez had Magnificent Song rolling to the outside down the lane and got by in the final yards for the win.

"The pace wasn't too rapid, so I just had to cover her up and find a spot to run in," Gomez said. "This was my first time on her and Todd gave me great information. The gate opened and we just took it from there. It just took her a little while to get into gear."

It was the second straight win for Magnificent Song, who had won a turf allowance race at Keeneland April 7.

"We put blinkers on her last time to keep her focused and she was so sharp she won on the lead all the way," said Pletcher, saying he'll keep Magnificent Song on the turf for now. "It worked out better today because she was able to sit off the pace and then make her run. She's an improving filly, and the blinkers have helped her.

"We might think about putting her back on the dirt at some point, but for right now we'll stick with what's working."

Kitty Hawk, the 2-1 favorite, finished up well to be fourth.

Magnificent Song is a gray/roan filly by Unbridled's Song out of the Storm Cat mare Song to Remember. She was bred in Kentucky by ClassicStar and races for the L & D Farm of Diane and Larry Vaughn. Magnificent Song collected $68,359 for her win, which improved her record to 3-0-1 in six starts and more than doubled her bankroll to $134,102.

The winner paid $14, $7.40, and $4.80 while Fiery Dancer returned $9 and $5.40. May Night paid $3.60 to show.

Pletcher won the first race with maiden Alotofappeal and the fourth race with Venetian Sunset. The Edgewood was the fifth race on the card.
