Pat Valenzuela gets Derby mount on Keyed Entry.
Patrick Valenzuela, who won the 1989 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) aboard Sunday Silence, has been named to ride Hutcheson (gr. II) winner Keyed Entry in the 2006 Run for the Roses, Todd Pletcher said Saturday in an interview with TVG.
Pletcher, who lost his number one rider when John Velazquez was injured in a spill at Keeneland Thursday, is currently looking to line up mounts for his other two Derby hopefuls, Bluegrass Cat and Sunriver.
Pletcher said Ramon Dominguez currently is the leading candidate to get the mount on Bluegrass Cat, who finished a well-beaten fourth in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I). Pletcher said several other jockeys also are being considered.
Sunriver, third in the Florida Derby (gr. I), still does not have enough graded earnings to make it into the Derby field, and Pletcher said he does not want to commit to a rider until he has a better idea whether the full-brother to Ashado will get in the race. He said that Chris DeCarlo, who has been riding a great deal for the two-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner, could land that mount.
