Dennis Carr Notches 2,000th Win of Career

Jockey Dennis Carr reached a career milestone Thursday at Golden Gate Fields when he recorded his 2,000th win aboard the 4-year-old filly Joan Elle in the fifth race.

Carr, a 35-year-old native of Beth Page, N.Y., rode his first winner at Aqueduct in 1987. Unaware that he was on the verge of a landmark victory, Carr was surprised when he was presented with a sign commemorating his 2,000th win when he returned to the Golden Gate Fields winner's circle.

"I had no idea," said Carr. "That's the easy way to do it. When you don't know it, you don't put any pressure on yourself."

Carr, who at 5-foot-7 is taller than your average jockey, said he was proud to reach the 2,000-win mark.

"Considering that, when I started everyone said I'd be too big (to ride long), I didn't think I'd get half that number," he said.

Joan Elle, who ducked out at the start, rallied from last in a field of five to win the one mile race for $6,250 claiming fillies and mares by three-quarters of a length over 35-to-1 long shot Audaciously. Trained by Chuck Jenda, Joan Elle paid $8.40 after earning her second win in seven starts.
