Lawyer Ron, 'Cat Top Derby Wager at Midway

Unbeaten Discreet Cat, winner of the UAE Derby (UAE-II) at Dubai's Nad Al Sheba, and Lawyer Ron, the likely favorite in next week's Arkansas Derby (gr. II), stood as co-favorites at the midway point of betting in Pool 3 of Churchill Downs' 2006 Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

The two contenders for the 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby stood at 6-1 at the end of Friday's betting in the four-day pool. Godolphin's Discreet Cat ($11,104) was the slight choice over the Estate of James Hines' Rebel (gr. III) winner Lawyer Ron ($10,901) in total wagering in the pool. Bettors in the U.S. and Canada had wagered $100,023 at the close of betting on Friday evening. Wagering is set to resume at noon (all times Eastern) on Saturday. The pool will close on Sunday, April 9 at 6 p.m.

Unbeaten Florida Derby (gr. I) winner Barbaro (8-1) and Brother Derek (9-1), who is expected to be the heavy favorite in Saturday's Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), followed the top pair. Others with support included Santa Anita Derby contender Point Determined (14-1), Illinois Derby (gr. II) favorite Cause to Believe (15-1), Wood Memorial (gr. I) contender Bob and John (15-1), San Felipe (gr. II) winner A.P. Warrior (17-1), and Fountain of Youth (gr. II) winner First Samurai (18-1).

The Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) is May 6.
